In Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the Armed Forces Information and Recruitment Center (CIRFA) plays a key role in supporting young people towards careers in the army. Since its opening in August 2024, this local branch has facilitated the procedures for many residents of western Guyana. It inaugurated its premises this Thursday, January 23.
For several months, the CIRFA of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni has been welcoming young people from the town to offer them a chance to build a solid future within the armed forces. This Tuesday, January 23, an official ceremony marked the inauguration of this branch, which responds to a growing need in a city where nearly half of the 40,000 inhabitants are young adults.
“Many young people have potential, but encounter difficulty finding employment. The army is there to offer them a second chance and a structuring framework,” explains Warrant Officer David Trezeux, recruitment advisor and head of the branch.
The Saint-Laurent branch was created to simplify procedures. Previously, young people had to go to Cayenne, which represented a significant constraint for many. Today, they can come directly to CIRFA and attend collective information sessions on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
CIRFA introduces young people to more than 170 professions, ranging from combat positions, such as infantry or tank piloting, to support functions, such as mechanics, cooking, or even IT. “Even without a diploma, it is possible to flourish in the army. Everything can be learned as long as you are motivated”insists Warrant Officer Trezeux.
These sessions allow young people to understand the opportunities and prepare a personalized path: creation of a file, psychotechnical, sporting and medical tests, then orientation interviews. The validated applications are then sent to mainland France. Since the opening of the branch, nearly 80 young people have been welcomed, and around ten have already signed their contract.
-In addition to promoting access to professions, this branch is part of a social mission.
I have seen former soldiers return to Guyana, start their businesses and succeed. We hope to offer this opportunity to even more young people so that they can build a better future.
underlines the adjutant.
With a national objective of 16,000 recruits per year and around 250 young people hired in Guyana in 2024the army is counting on this branch to continue to support the young people of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and the surrounding area.
