An American journalist was suspended “indefinitely” by his channel after inappropriate comments targeting the physique of Czech player Barbora Krejcikova.
His apologies were not enough to save him from punishment. American journalist Jon Wertheim, officiating on the Tennis Channel, was suspended “indefinitely” by his channel for making fun of Barbora Krejcikova's physique. He notably made inappropriate comments concerning the Czech player's forehead before her semi-final of the Masters against the Chinese Zheng Qinwen.
On the sidelines of his intervention, the journalist complained about the framing which did not put him to his advantage. “Who do you take me for, Barbora Krejcikova? Look at this forehead,” he said. And the video quickly made the rounds on social networks, sparking numerous reactions. Starting with that of the main person concerned, who deplored these remarks after her defeat in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
“You may have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during coverage of the WTA Finals that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it is disappointing to see these types of unprofessional comments. This is not the first time that something like this has happened in the world of sport,” lamented the winner of Roland-Garros in 2021 and Wimbledon last July in a series of messages posted on X.
For his part, the journalist apologized, citing a “joke” that he considered “deeply regrettable”. “Although this was a private rehearsal, this exchange was broadcast live inadvertently and without context. I am not the victim here. It was neither professional, nor charitable, nor representative of the person I strive to be. I am responsible. I’m sorry,” said Jon Wertheim, who will have to wait before returning to the air.
