ATP > Thiem’s somewhat chilling admission regarding his Grand Slam title: “I suddenly realized that it wouldn’t necessarily make me happy forever”

‘Dominic Thiem gave a long interview to our colleagues at Majorshe returned to your title at the US Open in 2020 and the somewhat difficult period that followed.

« Honestly, I think at the time I was taking it too seriously for my career and for my life. I even thought it would make me happy forever and change my life forever. But of course, it’s not like that. It’s an illusion. In fact, nothing has changed. And honestly, in 20 years, if we’re still here, no one will really care if I’m a Grand Slam champion or not. At the time, I didn’t think like that. I really said to myself: “OK, if I don’t win a Grand Slam in my career, my career is not great and I will always have doubts.” It was not an easy situation. Of course, it’s very nice to have the title, to have the trophy at home, but in the end it’s just a trophy and it shouldn’t make a big difference in life. That’s how I see it now. I suddenly realized that this wouldn’t necessarily make me happily ever after. After three or four months, things got back to normal and it wasn’t like I expected. It was a very interesting situation, a difficult experience too. But I’m very happy that I was able to do it.”
