ATP > Former World No. 19 Pablo Cuevas Announces Retirement

It was with a very beautiful message posted on his Instagram account that Pablo Cuevas announced this Wednesday, September 24, 2024 the end of his very beautiful career.

After having played only two small matches in 2024, the last of which was at the end of August during the US Open qualifiers where he was invited, the 38-year-old Uruguayan has therefore bowed out.

Winner of six career titles, the most beautiful of which came at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Pablo will be remembered above all for his creative tennis and his strokes of genius.

The farewell of an artist with a silky one-handed backhand and precious touch on the ball.

“This journey began with dreams… with the innocence of a child who wanted to become a tennis player. From kayaking on the Uruguay River to Philippe Chatrier, how many significant experiences… reality has surpassed dreams. Tennis has been more than a sport, it has been my passion, my daily motivation, and the reason why I got up every morning with the desire to be better. In the meantime, I have experienced everything, from spectacular results to storms where time seemed to slow down and uncertainty was total. Sport, like life, surprises you and you often have to choose with more doubts than certainties. But what I have never doubted is the luck I have had in more than 20 years of career. How many trips and places, how many people met off the court, and what extraordinary players on the court – Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, to name a few from this wonderful era. Everything I learned and the happiness with which I went through this journey, week after week, building and dismantling the bag, from tournament to tournament, always with the illusion intact.

Mom and Dad, thank you for giving me the freedom to choose and for supporting me unconditionally. Without you, all this would never have started. Felipe and Ana, thank you for dedicating to me what is most precious: your time, to invest quality hours in my dream. I had to live with injuries throughout my career, thanks to the different doctors who were decisive. To all those who were in the box, thank you for guiding me and always demanding the best from me, I did not make it easy for them. Until the last game, I received messages from all of you, and even though I was far away, I know your efforts to follow the games, the celebrations in front of the television or wherever there was an image. All that good energy always reached me and I want to thank you. I am coming to the end, but I will continue to be linked to tennis, because I love it, and it would be very unfair to it if I could not share everything I have learned during this unforgettable journey. Alfonsina, Antonia and Clarita take priority after having accompanied me unconditionally and encouraged me every day, wherever we are. I am excited about what is to come, about the immediacy and the new opportunities that will surely arise. That’s all, my friends!
