The borderless iPhone is not coming yet

The borders around the iPhone screens may shrink like nothing, but nothing changes, they are still there, firmly in place! And that's not likely to change for a while: the dream of a borderless iPhone won't come true for a few years.

Zero borders. This is the objective thatApple has been pursuing for several years for screensiPhonewith the help of two of its main suppliers, LG Display and Samsung Display. The manufacturer hoped to launch volume production of such screens for the iPhone 18 planned for 2026, but according to the site The Elecwe would still be far from the mark. Technical obstacles still remain to be overcome.

It's stuck in the technique

The process is complex. Unlike the curved screens that we have seen in smartphones from Samsung (like the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014) or from Xiaomi, Apple is seeking to obtain a screen that fits the angular edges of the iPhone, while maintaining the style flat of the smartphone (which is also that of the Apple Watch). This design, described as “ similar to a pebble » internally, is particularly complicated to obtain.

It involves combining two technologies: Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE), which protects OLED displays from environmental damage, and Optical Clear Adhesive (OCA), which is used to attach the adhesive films. on the curved edges. It's the OCA in particular that is the problem, it causes a sort of visual distortion, not to mention concerns about impact resistance.

The good news is that Apple is working on this type of borderless screen. But the bad news is that we're not likely to see it land on an iPhone for a few years! In the meantime, we can bet that the manufacturer will want to further reduce the border surrounding the iPhone's screens; that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max measures only 1.15 mm, a record in this area.
