Is the end of the smartphone approaching? Tech giants, such as Meta and Apple, are increasingly focusing on smart glasses. These could well become our next daily communication and information tool, thus relegating the smartphone to the status of a simple accessory.
The smartphone, a tool soon to be outdated?
Is the cell phone, omnipresent in our lives for almost three decades, doomed to disappear? In any case, this is the vision shared by many Tech players. Starting with Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, who recently announced, during a video on Cleo Abram's channelwhich smart glasses would represent the next big computing platform. This prediction is based on the observation that users increasingly favor discretion and practicality. The glasses, which are worn directly on the face, offer a more immersive and less intrusive experience than the smartphone – between us, I'm not completely convinced.
I think the trend in computing is to become more ubiquitous, more natural and more social. So you want to be able to interact with the people around you, and I think that's probably going to be the next major platform after phones.
Smart glasses, the future of Tech?
While the idea of replacing your phone with a pair of glasses may seem futuristic, recent technological advances make this prospect more and more plausible. The big names in Tech are investing massively in this sector, each offering their own vision of smart glasses. Apple, with the Vision Pro, and Meta are the most prominent players, but many other companies are also working on similar projects.
In fact, Mark Zuckerberg believes in his Orion project so much that he thinks his smart glasses will completely replace smartphones within ten years. “There will come a time when your smartphone is in your pocket more than out of it, and I think that will happen in the 2030s and, although you can complete the task more fully or more efficiently with your phone, users will opt for the convenience of glasses to do so”.
These connected glasses will offer a multitude of features, ranging from augmented reality to real-time information display. They could thus become real personal assistants, capable of answering our questions, guiding us on our trips and keeping us informed of the latest news.
