Apple has integrated a new feature into iPhones to strengthen privacy

Police in Detroit, Michigan (USA) have revealed a new feature installed in iPhones.

Past exchanges between Apple and US federal agencies n. We will particularly remember the scandal that broke out in 2016, when the FBI asked Apple to create a tool to bypass iOS security in order to access the locked iPhone of the San Bernardino shooter. To which Apple responded in the negative, arguing that such a tool would endanger the privacy of millions of users. The latest case involves Apple and, this time, the Detroit (Michigan) police. It even revealed a function hidden by Apple.

The police noticed that iPhones kept locked for more than 72 hours were automatically reset. These had been seized for forensic analysis, but the investigators’ work would have been considerably complicated by a mysterious reboot. According to Detroit police experts, “this new “feature” of some sort has increased the difficulty of forensically preserving digital evidence”.

On the other hand, this feature promises to be wonderful news for users. If they lose their iPhone due to theft or otherwise, it will automatically reset to preserve the user’s privacy. Magnet Forensics researchers add “There are no prompts or warnings displayed on the device to cancel or interrupt this process. It should be noted that while the timer is 72 hours (3 days) in iOS 18.1, it was originally for 7 days in iOS 18.0”. On X, Jiska demonstrated this in a disturbing publication.
