WhatsApp will soon let you search for images in Google Images

Instant messaging will soon include an option allowing you to launch a search in Google Images from a received image.

Debunking a fake image received via WhatsApp will soon be possible. The instant messaging application, owned by Meta, is testing a feature allowing you to search the Web for an image received in a conversation. The feature is currently being tested with users of the latest beta version of WhatsApp on Android.

Search in Google Images

This new functionality, accessible from the option menu offered when the image is displayed in full screen, allows you to launch a query in the Google search engine. This query, which is nothing other than a reverse image search, should allow users to check if the image they received in a conversation is authentic. Above all, the module will allow them to see if the image displayed before their eyes has been manipulated or taken out of context.

With this new feature, WhatsApp will introduce, without explicitly saying so, a new layer of security which will allow everyone to verify information received. Users will thus be able to obtain a quick response if they have any doubts about the authenticity of content. They will no longer need to save the image first in their smartphone gallery or open their web browser to launch a reverse image search on Google Images.

For now, the feature is only available to a small group of Android beta testers. It should nevertheless be deployed on a large scale, on Android and iOS, in the coming weeks.

Over the past few months, WhatsApp teams have continued to update the application to integrate new features. A few weeks ago, WABetaininfo revealed, for example, that messaging was preparing a new system for launching a call from the application. A few weeks later, the app was testing new customization options aimed at applying themes directly to conversations. More recently, WhatsApp formalized the upcoming arrival of a real contact manager within the messaging application with a fully secure storage system.
