If for some reason your PC is still running Windows 10, then its official support will end next year. To maintain this version without fearing for your security, you will have to pay 30 dollars for one year.
Six years after the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft released Windows 11. Whether by choice or hardware limitation, some users continue to use the previous version. The problem is that from October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer deploy security updates for Windows 10, at least for free. Indeed, the Redmond firm will allow you to obtain an additional year of support… But you will have to pay 30 dollars for that (the price in euros remains to be determined). It’s not a rumor, it’s the American giant which announced it on its blog.
Of course, there is no obligation to pay to continue using your PC under Windows 10. But without this extension of security updates, users will necessarily expose themselves to much more risk. Microsoft takes the opportunity to recall the benefits of Windows 11 which offers advanced security features, including hardware protection based on TPM 2.0 (a hardware security module) and even improved authentication methods. This latest version of the OS also benefits from protection against phishing.
In short, the choice will be left to consumers (as well as to businesses who will have a little extra time to renew their PC fleet). It will therefore be possible to opt for updating to Windows 11 if possible, to buy a new PC including this latest version or to extend Windows 10 support for one year for a fee. The option of staying with the latter without paying is also on the table but turns out to be much riskier.
