RCS struggles to convince iPhone users, here’s why

Despite RCS integrating with iOS 18, iPhone users don’t seem to be as excited about it as expected. A survey reveals why this protocol, although praised by Google, has not yet won over all these owners.

RCS (Rich Communication Services) was presented as the future of SMS. It offers features such as read receipts, real-time input indicators, and image sharing and videos in high quality. However, although Google has pushed for its adoption, many iPhone users are still reluctant to go through it. A recent survey helped to understand why this technology has not yet won the hearts of Apple users.

The survey, which collected more than 10,000 responses, reveals several reasons explaining this reluctance. Although this technology was introduced with iOS 18many users outside the United States do not feel not concerned through debate RCS vs. iMessage. In , for example, applications like WhatsApp or Messenger already dominate messaging, therefore making it less relevant. However, SFR recently activated its network, while and Bouygues Telecom plan to follow this trend without specifying a date. Free Mobile remains silent on this adoption, but this development demonstrates a desire to modernize messaging services.

RCS is still hampered by a lack of operator support and clarity

Another major issue mentioned in the survey is lack of RCS support by some operators telephone calls. Many users reported that they could not enable the protocol because their carrier did not yet support it. Whether in New Zealand, Australia or Poland, iPhone users are still waiting for their carriers to support it. In Francethe adoption of RCS by SFR is a sign encouragingbut the majority of Orange and Bouygues Telecom users are still waiting for a precise deployment date.

Other users simply explain that they don’t know what is or how to activate RCS with iOS 18. Apple has not made its integration obvious, and the steps to follow to enable this service on iPhone remain unclear for many. Despite these obstacles, those who have succeeded in adopting it are showing themselves satisfied. They like the ability to share high-quality photos and videos and interact more easily with their contacts using Android. It remains to be seen whether this technology will convince more users in the months to come.
