Two girls aged 13 months and 2 and a half years died as a result of smoke poisoning during the accidental fire in the family apartment on Friday, the mayor of Melun (Seine-et-Marne) announced this Sunday.
According to information from a police source on Friday, the fire broke out around 3:00 p.m. in an apartment located on the 3rd floor of a recently constructed four-story building. The tenant and two of her young children were poisoned by the fumes.
According to a second police source, the girls, then in cardio-respiratory arrest, were resuscitated by firefighters and transported to a Parisian hospital. “These two children unfortunately died in the evening“, wrote in a press release released on Saturday the mayor of Melun Kadir Mebarek, expressing his “immense sadness“.
The mother, aged 32, was more lightly poisoned and hospitalized. Her two other children were at school at the time of the tragedy. “The city of Melun will do everything possible to support the mother in this ordeal, whether for her rehousing or for the support she will need in the weeks and months to come.“, assured the city councilor.
