The new AGESA 1.2.0.3a patch will improve the compatibility of DDR5 in 1R and 2R configurations on AMD 800 series motherboards, providing performance optimization.
A New BIOS for B850 Motherboards
MSI, a leading motherboard manufacturer, has announced the availability of a new BIOS update for its budget AMD 800 series motherboards. According to information relayed by @g01d3nm4ng0, the AGESA 1.2.0.3a patch is now available. available for some models in the series, including the X870 and B850. Currently, the update is applied to MSI B850 motherboards under the version: 7E56v1A41.
This AGESA 1.2.0.3a update, incorporating patch A, will soon be deployed for X870 and X870E motherboards. It aims to improve memory support within the AMD 800 platform. According to the release documents, the optimization will focus on the compatibility of DDR5 memory in various configurations as follows:
- Publication of AGESA PI-1.2.0.3a Patch A.
- Optimization of compatibility of single rank (1R) memory in 2DPC configuration.
- Optimization of dual rank (2R) memory compatibility in 1DPC configuration.
Impacts of the New Patch on Memory Modules
Although the details on the precise impact of this BIOS update on the compatibility of single and dual rank DDR5 memory are not completely clarified, current trends from manufacturers favor increasing memory speeds while reducing latency. This patch could therefore facilitate the overclocking of memories and also improve their compatibility with the DDR5 modules already present on the X870 and B850 motherboards.

-Single-rank memory modules contain chips on only one side, typically providing better compatibility, higher speeds, and low latency. Conversely, dual-rank memories, which have chips on either side, are also optimized for overclocking and aim to increase the total memory capacity. The memoir single row or 1R en configuration 2DPC (2 DIMMs per channel) is accessible by installing two modules per memory channel, while the memory 2R en configuration 1DPC (1 DIMM par canal) is carried out with one module per channel.
This BIOS update should therefore optimize these configurations on AMD's B850 motherboards, providing minimal improvements in certain applications. To install this update, users will need to download it from the official MSI website in the support section dedicated to their motherboards.
