A (small) revolution for Instagram followers. The profile pages abandon the square format, emblematic of the social network. Grids will now display content as vertical rectangles. This was announced by Instagram manager Adam Mosseri in an Instagram story published on Friday, who clarified that the change would be deployed “over the weekend”. As noted Le Figaroit was already visible on certain profiles this Saturday afternoon.

“I know some of you really love your squares. And square photos are sort of Instagram's legacy. But today, most of what is uploaded, both photos and videos, is vertical in its orientation. It’s a shame to crop them too much”justified the boss of Instagram, while recognizing “a change”which could be “a little painful”. But the manager only sees “a transition”. “I think people will, in the long run, be happy to see that more of their photos and videos are actually visible as intended in their profile, rather than being aggressively cropped.”

Tested since August 2024

This change is not really a surprise. Last August, users spotted that Instagram was testing the portrait format in Instagram profiles. This was confirmed by the social network, owned by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta group. “We are testing a grid of vertical profiles on a small number of people”Christine Pai, spokesperson for Instagram, declared to the American media The Verge. “This is a limited test, and we will listen to community feedback before rolling out anything else.” In the era of vertical videos, this last trace of early Instagram no longer necessarily made sense. The layout of the feed had already been set to portrait format a long time ago.

Despite everything, this did not stop Internet users from complaining about this development. “My page was a perfectly organized little collection of centered square images and you RUINED it with stupid rectangles”criticizes an artist on X. The most protesting being those who had spent time creating a puzzle-style grid. That is to say, to publish blocks of 3, 6 or even 9 photos, the arrangement of which creates a large image. “RIP all your old posts into a 3×3 multi-image mosaic”writes for example an Internet user. However, disgruntled Instagram users can rest assured: some have noticed that the “adjust preview” functionality allows you to personalize the previews of publications in the profile grid.
