Microsoft recently filed a patent exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence to revolutionize video game development and customization. This system, described in the patent filed in 2024 and now available to the public, offers tools that would allow developers and players to create tailor-made narrative content via simple commands. The technology aims to quickly generate objects, game rules, non-player characters (NPCs) and stories in line with the suggestions provided. The Redmond giant also shared a practical example to explain how the patent works, especially with regard to application in a sandbox game like Minecraft. Basically, with this new Microsoft system, players could request new features, like game mechanics, characters or entire narratives, which artificial intelligence would generate in real time, providing a level of interactivity never seen before. This approach would allow games to constantly evolve based on user preferences.
However, as we always say in these cases, it is important to emphasize that this is a patent and that many patented technologies never reach the commercial development stage. However, Microsoft’s interest in exploring the potential of AI in the gaming sector remains clear, a commitment already demonstrated with the partnership with OpenAI and previous projects such as the collaboration with Inworld to create characters and stories with AI. Additionally, there is no shortage of doubts about the use of AI in game storytelling. Figures such as Brian Fargo, CEO of Microsoft studio inXile Entertainment, have expressed skepticism, saying that AI can be useful for repetitive tasks, but cannot replace human creative talent. The ethical approach and job protection remain key points in the debate on the integration of AI into creative processes.
