The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max could feature two new photo sensors. The definition of the telephoto lens used for zooms would be multiplied by four, that of the selfie camera would double.
Smartphone manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to innovate to encourage consumers to adopt new models. Their latest fad is AI, but very often, it is at the photo level that changes are made to improve the experience offered by the previous generation. Apple is also preparing some new features on this subject for its next iPhones.
According to information from Digital Chat Stationa renowned Chinese leaker, the American firm will modify two photo sensors for its iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The periscopic telephoto lens would go from 12 to 48 MPand would still offer 5x optical zoom. This significant increase in definition should allow for better quality of photos captured with this lens.
Three 48 MP photo sensors for the iPhone 17 Pro?
The 48 MP can be used to perform pixel fusion, in order to obtain better light capture. If this is the case, the photos would still come out in 12 MP, but would still gain in sharpness and detail. Another option would be to produce photos in 48 MP, which would, among other things, make it easier to improve the digital zoom of the devices, which is much less efficient than the optical zoom on the iPhone.
The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would no longer be equipped with any 12 MP sensor since the front camera would also evolve. In its case, it would double the number of pixels from 12 to 24 MP, enough to take better selfies. The main wide-angle sensor as well as the ultra-wide-angle would retain 48 MP, as on the iPhone 16 Pro.
Leaks relating to the next iPhones are still rare, but we are talking about a reduced Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the return to an aluminum frame rather than titanium on the Pro models, or even a brand new block horizontal photo, like on the Pixel, which would constitute a major design change.
