Minecraft: Notch backpedals and abandons his spiritual successor project – News

It all started last week. Markus Persson, better known under the pseudonym Notch and creator of the unbeatable Minecraftsuccumbed to the irrepressible urge to talk about his next projects on social networks. “Roughly speaking, I announced Minecraft 2” he finally concluded, saying to himself “100% serious.” Better yet, he claimed to be a man of his word who would keep his promise to give Minecraft a spiritual successor. “in a way that in no way seeks to sneakily encroach on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing.” If we speak of a spiritual successor and not of a sequel strictly speaking, it is because the man no longer owns the rights to his creation. He in fact sold them to Microsoft, which still paid $2.5 billion to obtain the license and its studio in 2014. But let’s return to the announcement of Notch, which of course delighted fans of the license. But if the year started very well for them, they will quickly become disillusioned.

And the disappointment of the year is…

Just one week after this somewhat unusual announcement, Notch backpedals and proudly indicates working on Levers and Chests. For a few days, we already knew that the project was in the pipeline. It was introduced to us as a roguelike with old-school dungeons, first-person exploration, and turn-based combat. This game project was even submitted to players for their opinion through a survey on January 1st. Presented as a “marketing survey”the latter opposed this famous title to Minecraft 2. The goal was to define which project interested the players the most. And unsurprisingly, it is Minecraft 2 who won this duel hands down, with 81.5% of the votes. This is where the whole announcement story that we told you about above started.

But against all odds, Notch and his teams finally opted for Levers and Chests. To hell with the will of the players Notch nevertheless said he wanted to listen:“I talked to the guys in the office. Looks like we’re developing Levers and Chests,” launched Notch on his X account. Not surprisingly, many players asked for accounts in the responses. After having joked about the fact that a successor to Minecraft was not so expected because he had not reached 90% of the votes, he assured that Levers and Chests will be much more fun than a spiritual sequel. Not sure that the players appreciate this turnaround “I know what you really want.” But to find out what reception will be reserved for him, you will have to be patient. No date, no window, no support, yet. And we’re not even completely safe from another turnaround, who knows. After all, Notch likes to provoke on the networks. And we prefer, ultimately, that they play with the desires of the players. At least he talks about video games and stops sharing his problematic opinions on society, to say the least.
