Archaeology: discovery of the wrecks of two ships off the coast of El Jadida

This discovery is part of a program of underwater and underwater archaeological researchwhich aims to discover new underwater archaeological sites and to carry out archaeological documentation of other sites already discovered, reports the Center.

These are the wrecks of two metal ships, one near the beach of the town ofEl Jadida and the other near the entrance to the port, adds the same source.

According to the first descriptions of the wrecks, these ships probably date from the second half of the 19th centurythe peak period of the activities of the ancient port of El Jadida, considered at the time as one of the main commercial ports of Morocco.

Historical data and maritime charts report several maritime accidents at the entrance to the port of El Jadida, which resulted in the sinking of several ships, including Alcyne, Le Papin, Morocco, and Amazon.

These accidents are mainly due to the difficulty of access to the port, particularly before the construction of the breakwaters, as well as unfavorable weather conditions.
