You may remember the Mac Pro 2013, this extraordinary computer from Apple which caused a lot of talk at the time. Its cylindrical design had earned it the unflattering nickname of “trash can”, a comparison which had not failed to annoy the Cupertino company.
Phil Schiller, then vice-president of Apple, even responded to criticism with a famous phrase: can’t innovate anymore, my ass
(we can’t innovate anymore? my ass). This controversial design is now inspiring web DIYers in an unexpected way, to say the least. A Reddit user just gave a second life to his decommissioned 2013 Mac Pro, literally transforming it into… office trash can.
A meticulous transformation
If you don’t know the Mac Pro 2013, it looks like a black aluminum cylinder about thirty centimeters high:

Its exterior part comes off like a large tube that you can slide up and down to access the internal components.
The user therefore emptied the interior of his dead Mac Pro, while retaining the back of the computer which serves as a guide rail for the exterior tube. He then created three 3D printed supports to hold the structure, allowing him to install a trash bag that stays in place when he slides the tube down.

A project that is debated
This transformation is not unanimous on Reddit. Many users criticize this “recycling” of a device that was worth nearly 4000 euros upon release. They believe that even out of service, the 2013 Mac Pro deserved a better fate.
Citric_OW’s creativity is not devoid of humor, however. Its system even allows you to neatly install a garbage bag, held in place by the outer shell when it slides. An ironic nod to the nickname that has followed this Mac Pro throughout its career. You can learn more about the release by following this link.
