should we really believe the “leaks” about the new Nintendo console?

By the end of March 2025, Nintendo plans to present what will succeed the Switch. But the manufacturer must also face more and more numerous leaks, and above all very opportunistic ones.

Rarely has the pressure been so great for Nintendo. Since the announcement of the development of a new console, rumors have been rife, but the last few days have further increased the level of anticipation around the Switch 2 – or whatever its name is.

It must be said that the Japanese manufacturer must unveil the one that will succeed the Switch “by the end of March 2025”, according to its own words, so that its presentation is probably only a matter of days, or even a few weeks. .

Accessories based on vacuum

CES 2025 also added a layer: prop makers took advantage of the Las Vegas technology show to show elements planned for the future Nintendo console. It is not the console that is presented, but simply shells or protections which could – perhaps – adapt to the next Switch.

According to rumors and revelations from serious media like Bloomberg or The Verge, minor prop makers, far from Nintendo’s main distribution networks, have sniffed out the right opportunity to get people talking about them. This does not mean that the accessories supposedly adapted to a possible form factor of the Switch 2 are wrong, but there is nothing official about it. The anticipation surrounding this new console is such that some second-rate brands are taking advantage of it to attract attention, in one way or another.

When we discreetly question manufacturers of more official accessories, they explain to Tech&Co that they are subject to “particularly restrictive” non-disclosure contracts with Nintendo. Entering the manufacturer’s third-party product development program is not an easy task and requires respecting strict rules.

“Props who supposedly unveil Switch 2-related products are not part of the official channels,” a well-known manufacturer of licensed accessories confirms to Tech&Co. “But it allows them to make the headlines for a few days, because the wait is bound to be high.”

A wait that puts pressure on Nintendo

If we understand that players are scrambling for possible information about the new Nintendo console before its official announcement, we must therefore weigh what social networks describe as “leaks”. In the case of the accessories present at CES 2025, it seems unlikely that Nintendo has granted them this right even though the manufacturer has not yet revealed anything.

Most of the accessories on public display are based on… models, themselves supposedly based on “authentic examples” from assembly plants. This detail already shows that these prop makers do not have access to official circuits. While this doesn’t mean that the console won’t look like those fake models on display in the aisles of CES, it should be noted that these are mostly from little-known Chinese companies.

There is nevertheless a reality: yes, the Switch 2 is coming, and very soon. The “leaks” should therefore continue to multiply until Nintendo officially speaks out. However, certain information has been refined over the months: the presence of Nvidia for the chip is now a certainty, as are revised, corrected and magnetic Joy-Cons, as well as the retained hybrid status of the Switch.

Rumors surrounding an announcement from January 8 have set the web ablaze in recent days: however, this is a poor understanding of Nintendo, which, even for a simple “teaser”, systematically announces its presentations several days or hours in advance. In October 2016, when Nintendo planned to show what the Switch would be, a publication on X made it known in this way, without making a surprise “drop” like some video game publishers and developers.

As for truly official information, Nintendo spoke three times: a first time to announce that the console would be unveiled by the end of March 2025, a second time to guarantee sufficient stocks for the launch, and a third time to confirm the backward compatibility of Switch games with this new machine.

From now on, all that remains is to wait without taking for granted everything that may escape on social networks and specialized forums.
