Apple’s new artificial intelligence is the subject of debate. Some of the notifications issued by the “Notification Summary” are truncated and infringe upon the original issuer.
Apple Intelligence (AI) is currently in a large-scale “test” phase in the USA and England before deployment in April worldwide. Officially, AI is supposed to be in its final stages. Unofficially, things are clearly not going as they should. The launch of ChatGPT with iOS 18.2 did not go smoothly, and it seems that another feature is now in question.
The Summary of notifications is a function allowing you to group several notifications from a single application. Apple’s AI then makes a brief summary of the most important information in a single banner. While this sounds promising on paper, in practice things look much less glorious.
Our colleagues at the BBC have paid the price and are asking “Apple urgently resolve this issue”. Indeed, people who downloaded the BBC News and BBC Sports applications had the unfortunate surprise of seeing bad notification summaries. For example, a BBC Sports summary announced that “Brazilian tennis player, Rafael Nadal, had come out”.
Apple Intelligence thus made a bad mix of information, a “notification” from BBC Sports having instead reported the Brazilian player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva who had publicly revealed his homosexuality. And BBC Sports doesn’t appear to be the only app impacted.
This type of bug is obviously problematic for the media originating the notifications. It can damage the credibility of the site, the BBC in this case. “As the world’s most trusted news media organization, it is crucial that the public can trust any information or journalism published on our behalf and that includes notifications”explains a BBC spokesperson.
