The Gemini Live AI model could appear in the Windows 11 taskbar via Chrome. The interface would appear as a floating window.
Gemini Live has been available on Android for all users via its dedicated application since September 2024. Google has new ambitions for its voice AI assistant, which could compete with Microsoft’s Copilot on its home turf, namely in Windows 11.
In Chromium, Windows Latest spotted mentions of a feature regarding Gemini Live, GLIC shortcut in Chrome, in Windows 11. The developers are reportedly working on a “floating window” in which the Gemini Live interface would be displayed outside the Chrome browser, although it would be the latter which would power the function.
Gemini in Windows 11 taskbar via Chrome?
In the description of the code, we understand that this floating Gemini Live window could be opened without going through Chrome, directly from a shortcut placed in the Windows 11 taskbar. Invoking the AI assistant on your PC would therefore prove to be a more practical, and many users could swap Copilot for Gemini Live if the functionality ends up being implemented.
We don’t know much more at the moment. The advantage of Gemini Live on Android is its interoperability with other Google applications, such as Gmail or Maps. On Windows 11, the assistant might be less useful in this regard, unless Chrome links Gemini Live to other Google services. On the other hand, we imagine that it would still be possible to submit images to him and communicate with him in a natural way.
Ultimately, Gemini Live could work on Windows 11 in a way quite similar to what Copilot was at one time, integrated into Edge, but available at any time, even when using third-party software. Copilot has since become a web application. On macOS, the ChatGPT app is also floating and the assistant can be invoked from anywhere, understanding what is happening on the screen. Google could take inspiration from this for Gemini Live on Windows 11.
