For some time now, this famous GPS guidance application has curiously lengthened journeys by adding unnecessary detours to routes. Better to avoid using it until the problem is corrected.

For many of us, Google Maps has become a faithful companion when traveling, but also in everyday life. Whether it’s to get to an appointment, check the travel time or simply find a nice little restaurant where you can have lunch, the GPS service is always there, faithful to the post, to the point of making itself indispensable. Also, the slightest bug can quickly take on catastrophic dimensions and completely ruin navigation!

Last November, for example, the application suffered a linguistic bug which caused it to “speak” a language other than that of the user. French had thus been replaced by Turkish, Russian and even Hebrew. Not very practical for understanding driving instructions! Fortunately, Google quickly identified and fixed the problem.

But since mid-December, the navigation application has experienced some hiccups. Indeed, if Waze is generally recognized for its efficiency in finding the fastest routes, it does not seem to be in top form! Many users report that the app offers them detours on secondary roads, resulting in unnecessarily long and complex routes, sometimes leading them to deviate from their usual route. Result: travel times are unnecessarily lengthened. This unusual behavior seems to mainly affect long distance journeys.

This is by no means an impression or isolated case since the developers of the application have confirmed that they are aware of the problem. The technical team is currently working to identify the origin of this malfunction which affects the route calculation system. This should reassure motorists who feared being late for work, for a family meal or an important meeting because of Waze!

While waiting for a fix, we must be extra vigilant. It is advisable to systematically check the different route options offered before setting off and to favor familiar roads if the suggested detour seems illogical. Otherwise, it is always possible to temporarily switch to Google Maps for more reliable routes.

This is not the first time that Waze has faced this type of problem. Already last September, Google had to correct a bug which caused the application to regularly make mistakes in estimating travel time.
