If you can activate your smartphone by showing your face, why not be able to open a door? In any case, Apple is preparing a doorbell that will automatically open the door to your 'personal palace' when it recognizes you.

No more problem of a forgotten key: the doorbell that Apple is preparing, according to the Power On newsletter by Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), would automatically unlock your front door, if it recognized you or one of your roommates. The doorbell would use the same facial recognition technology that lets you unlock your iPhone. And because it's Apple, the biometric information is, via the Secure Enclave chip, stored and processed elsewhere than in the rest of the hardware.

According to Gurman, the doorbell will likely be compatible with external hardware like HomeKit smart locks, and Apple is even considering partnering with another smart lock firm to offer a complete door system at launch. The camera is expected to leverage Apple's Proxima wifi/Bluetooth combo chip, which will also be used in the new HomePod Mini and Apple TVs next year.

Smart home

The new doorbell is part of the new steps taken by Apple in the smart home market. There have been rumors for a while that the company wanted to develop more services and devices based on Apple Intelligence. Included were a new smart home camera, an Apple-branded and new smart home displays, including a simple iPad-like device that could be magnetically attached to walls, and another that could be attached to a support by means of a robotic arm.
