For several months, a rumor has been making RPG fans salivate: a remake of the famous The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is reportedly in development. If this information is nothing new, it returns to the forefront today with new indications regarding a potential announcement.
A rumor dating from summer 2023
It was in July 2023 that the first echoes suggesting a remake of Oblivion emerged on social networks, and in particular on Reddit where the moderators were able to verify that the person who posted the information had indeed worked within the Virtuos Games studio at Paris.
According to him, the remake or remaster of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion would be codenamed Project Altar. The title would be developed with the Unreal Engine 5 to offer up-to-date visuals, but the gameplay and physics would remain provided by the Oblivion engine. The title would be mainly developed in Paris, helped by Black Shamrock, another studio owned by Virtuos, and located in Dublin. Already at the time, a release at the end of 2024/beginning of 2025 was envisaged.
If Bethesda and Microsoft remained silent on the subject, the clues seemed relatively convincing at the time. Better yet, some internal documents linked to leaks at Microsoft very clearly mentioned the development of an “Oblivion Remaster” game. With Starfield having marked 2023 as a key year for Bethesda, Microsoft could take advantage of this new momentum to capitalize on nostalgia and offer a second wind to one of the most iconic entries in The Elder Scrolls franchise. The release of the Oblivion remake could take place in 2025.
