PlayStation and AMD join forces to integrate AI into video games

Video game design continues to evolve. Since the PS1, Sony has worked every year to significantly improve the graphics of PlayStation games, so that everything looks more and more real. That’s why it seemed logical that AI would get involved in the subject. With the project AmethystSony and AMD are strengthening their ambition to be pioneers in terms of creations in the virtual world. And to make machines into real little robots!

Transform the gaming experience

By integrating AI into PlayStation games, Sony and AMD are diving deep into machine learning technologies for graphics and gameplay. Two main objectives stand out within the Amethyst project. The first is to build a better architecture for machine learning. This architecture will notably make it possible to process lightweight convolutional neural networks (CNN) for game graphics.

Secondly, it involves developing a set of high-quality CNNs for graphics. The partnership between the two companies builds on the work already implemented on the PS5 Pro, already equipped with AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture. In fact, the use of these technologies will allow you to benefit from much better graphics and advanced image clarity. If these new developments will first be implemented in video games, Sony and AMD plan to deploy the technology beyond this circle. Indeed, it was announced that it would be used in particular on PCs and other Cloud platforms.

B2B Talks

AI for security

If the first dimension of the use of artificial intelligence is intended to be entertaining, the development of technologies like that announced by Sony and AMD also makes it possible to strengthen online security.

Indeed, applied to other areas, machine learning allows fraud detection, particularly in the areas of fintech and cryptocurrency. As some video games are now based on cryptocurrency transactions, this technology will strengthen both security and the customer experience for users. Thus, beyond the aesthetic aspect which will be significantly improved, it is also a safer gaming environment to which the industry will be entitled.

Finally, automatic machine learning can also be transposed to other areas: data processing in companies, improvement of tasks, etc. An entire industry could then see its operations improved. The partnership between Sony and AMD is therefore not just a gaming issue: it promises to contribute to a much greater user experience.
