Instagram can take night photos on Android: here are the compatible models

Exciting news is coming for those who use Instagram on Android. The app introduced support for night photos. The novelty concerns the possibility of taking photos directly with the social application. The functionality that Instagram has just introduced actually arises from Google’s work carried out at the API level, with the aim of extending the hardware potential of Android devices also to third-party applications. More specifically, the APIs we are referring to are camera extensions for third-party applications. Essentially, Google allows third-party developers to leverage the hardware resources of Android devices to access different shooting modes. It is precisely according to this principle that the Instagram developers implemented night mode for filming directly with the Instagram application. Therefore, Android users will see the Night Mode option appear when they try to take photos with the Instagram app in dimly lit environments.

The suggestion to keep the camera still while shooting will appear, to allow better light acquisition. Google has defined the Night Sight feature for Instagram and makes it clear that it is recommended when shooting in low ambient light conditions with the social app. But not all models are compatible with this innovation. In fact, Google introduced full support for this extension with the latest Android 15 update, the December Feature Drop, and Instagram rolled it out over the past few hours. Pixels that have received this update are therefore certainly compatible, that is to say from Pixel 6 to the most recent models. Google also mentioned that the feature is available on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Flip 6 and Fold 6. And in the future it should arrive for other models, not yet specified. This for night mode is not the only extension made available by Google to third-party developers on photography. In fact, there are also those that allow access to Portrait, Face Retouch and HDR modes. So we can expect more news in this regard to come in the future.
