PlayStation and AMD announce Project Amethyst, a new partnership dedicated to the future of gaming
PlayStation has just announced a strategic partnership with AMD, called Project Amethyst, which promises to redefine the future of graphics technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in video games. At the center of this collaboration is the PS5 Pro, which introduces significant improvements in graphics rendering and ray tracing, thanks to an updated version of the RDNA 2 GPU and the innovative upscaling system of the AI called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). As we read on IGN USA, this decision marks a turning point not only for the Japanese giant but more generally for the entire industry, thanks to the open approach that allows other developers and companies to exploit these technologies. The PS5 Pro, revealed after months of waiting, represents an evolution of the base model without introducing a complete generational leap. The GPU, while remaining anchored to the RDNA 2 architecture, integrates advanced features from RDNA 3 and RDNA 4. This balance ensures compatibility with existing games and improves graphics performance and ray tracing. Among the new features, the adoption of BVH8 stands out with more efficient ray tracing and optimized use of shader units.

PSSR is Sony’s answer to artificial intelligence applied to games. Unlike solutions like Nvidia’s DLSS, which require dedicated hardware, Sony has designed a system that uses the GPU directly. This allows you to reduce costs and complexity, while maintaining high standards of visual quality. This technology paves the way for sharper, smoother images even on less powerful hardware, bringing the gaming experience closer to native 4K resolutions. But back to what was reported at the beginning of the article, with the Amethyst project, Sony and AMD aim to jointly develop advanced hardware architectures and neural networks. This will not only improve the visual quality of games on PlayStation, but could also positively influence the gaming world on PC and rival consoles such as Xbox. Additionally, the ability to bring these innovations to portable devices like the Steam Deck could redefine the standards of mobile gaming. Ultimately, the collaborative and open approach taken by Sony represents a signal of change for the entire industry. With the PS5 Pro and the alliance with AMD, Sony is not only innovating in its platform, but inviting the industry to explore new technological horizons, promising a future where graphics quality and accessibility will go hand in hand.
