Xbox prepares a cross-platform interface with Project Rainway

Xbox seems to be continuing with its “everything can become an Xbox” strategy by announcing the development of a multiplatform interface.

If the campaign announcement « This is an Xbox » (This is an Xbox) marked a decisive turning point in Xbox’s strategy, moving it from a console to an ecosystem, we learn today via Windows Central that Microsoft is developing a new interface to complete this transition.

A multiplatform interface

By turning every compatible device into a potential Xbox, Microsoft can boast of having a gigantic “console fleet”. However, it remains essential to create an interface that allows you to easily find your elements from one device to another. Otherwise, what’s the point? It is precisely this problem that the interface currently known under the name code would address. Project Rainway.

According to Windows CentralMicrosoft would be inspired to Project Rainway social features present on Battle.net, which can be found in games like Overwatch, Diablo or even Hearthstone. We can therefore imagine that with this interface, players will be able to find their saves thanks to a cloud system, allowing their progress to be preserved, including if it comes from a console like the PS5.

If the promise made by Xbox seems interesting, it now remains to be seen whether Xbox’s strategy, by multiplying on so many fronts, will pay off. The project is currently in its infancy, but it would mark an important step in the opening of the Xbox brand.
