We will have to wait a little longer than expected for the Switch 2, which should be released in summer 2025 rather than spring. Rumors about the machine are multiplying, and the latest job offer posted by Nintendo gives us additional information.

The Switch 2 will perhaps accommodate an SD Express readerwe come back to what that means.

How SD cards work

An SD card (Secure Digital), is a memory card for various electronic devices (cameras, cameras, telephones, consoles, etc.), regulated by the SD Association (formed by the companies SanDisk, Panasonic and Toshiba). Three important elements compose an SD card, the format – normal, micro and mini, the capacity – SD, SDHC, SDXC and SDUC, and the bus – default speed, high speed, UHS-I, UHS-II, UHS-III and SD Express. It was in 2018 that the SDUC capacity was announced, with a theoretical storage capacity of 128 TB. The same year, the bus (speed) SD Express is announced, with theoretical maximum read and write speeds approaching 1TB/second in 2018, and 4TB/s today.

In 2022, the SD Express bus is announced for microSD cardsbut we will have to wait until September 2024 for these to be marketed. However, the performance of a microSD Express is not usable only when the reader is SD Express compatible. Otherwise, these simply display the maximum performance of the reader used to read them (often UHS). However, there is currently very few devices on the market who have an SD Express reader, but the Nintendo Switch 2, planned for 2025, could be one of these devices.

A high-performance Switch?

Nintendo recently released a job offer for the position of electromechanical engineer and which requires experience with the SD Express bus. Already in September, rumors were circulating about the presence of an SD Express reader on the Switch 2. Currently the Switch has a capacity of only 32 GB (64 for the OLED model) pushing most players to buy an SD card to be able to store their games. Only, to play a game, you must transfer it back to the machinewhich can be a painful process.

Precisely, with the SD Express system, this transfer would be carried out at least four times faster only with microSD compatible with Switch the fastest of the current market. In fact, thanks to the read speed of the SD Express bus, it would in theory be possible to play directly from the microSDwithout the need to carry out any manipulation. However, the Switch 2 would have a capacity of 256 GBthe need for an SD card is therefore not obvious, even if it is likely that the games will be heavier than games on the current Switch.
