After Sony and Microsoft, Samsung could well enter the portable console market as a patent has been filed for a device with a unique proposition.
The portable console market has been in turmoil in recent weeks. We know that Xbox is preparing its own portable console (but we will have to be patient) and that Sony also has plans for a mysterious “portable PS5” without us knowing much more.
While waiting for the long-awaited release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2025, other manufacturers seem to want to jump on the bandwagon. This is the case of Samsung, which has just officially registered a patent for a new type of portable console.
A console with a folding screen
The patent in question was spotted by the site 91mobiles. This was visibly filed in 2022, but officially registered on November 12 for the whole world.
In the document, we can very clearly see a concept of a portable console with a folding screen. In the various diagrams, Samsung represents the machine in its folded and unfolded configuration, like a smartphone from the Galaxy Z Flip range.
The hinge is located on the back of the console along its entire length and thus reduces its format by two. We can also see the presence of two joysticks, positioned as on the Nintendo Switch, as well as two modules of 4 buttons placed on either side of the device. These visibly leave space for the two joysticks when the device is folded.
And that’s all we can say about this project from the Korean giant. As this is a patent, we do not know what OS Samsung would consider for the console or the technical characteristics of its screen. Above all, nothing is said that it will see the light of day for the moment.
