BRUSSELS, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) — The head of Belgian diplomacy, Hadja Lahbib, on Tuesday welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, described as “a crucial step to curb escalation in the Middle East.”
In a statement published on X, she stressed the urgency of a ceasefire throughout the region, including in the Gaza Strip. “Only the resumption of negotiations for a two-state solution can bring peace,” she said, while recalling that “civilians must be protected.”
This ceasefire in Lebanon, which came into force early Wednesday, temporarily puts an end to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
Ms Lahbib, tipped for the post of European Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, also called for intensifying diplomatic initiatives to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and protect civilian populations.
