Before Apple products become obsolete, they first become “vintage.” And that’s the category that now includes the iPhone X, first-generation AirPods, and the very first HomePod.

After five years since the end of distribution of an Apple product, it becomes vintage. It will continue to receive security updates, but will not be updated more on the software side. Their repair is also limited by available stocks. This is the first step before obsolescence, which occurs after seven years.

In this category, three new products are entering. And for once, we are not talking about iPhones, or at least not only: because for the very first time, two types of products that were not yet old enough to become obsolete have just moved into this category.

Indeed, the first generation AirPods, released in 2016, had seen their marketing end in March 2019, so it has been slightly more than five years since their release.

The first HomePod, meanwhile, is becoming “vintage” with a bit of a delay (its production ended in 2021), but given the product’s somewhat abrupt end, we can potentially understand a more rapid obsolescence.

Finally, on the iPhone side, the iPhone X has just entered its “vintage” phase, and its owners will therefore only have two years of security updates left.
