Remember the frenzy that Pokémon GO generated when it launched in the summer of 2016. The mobile video game based on augmented reality pushed players to run in the street and take all risks to catch the Pokémon nearby.

The title from developer Niantic managed to attract a maximum of 232 million people simultaneously that year. No, Pokémon GO is not yet at a standstill, even eight years later, while Pokémon Pocket has just been released. The studio behind the hit even explains that the players’ games involve a revolutionary geospatial generative artificial intelligence model.

Niantic trains geospatial artificial intelligence with Pokémon GO

Niantic explains in a long post on its official website that it is working on a “large geospatial model” (LGM) which would allow “ computers to not only perceive and understand physical spaces, but also interact with them in new ways, forming an essential part of AR glasses and other fields including robotics, content creation and autonomous systems ».

The AI could therefore deduce the missing parts of a scene, or imagine a place from a new angle like a human can do with their imagination. « Unlike typical 3D generative models, which produce scale-free assets, a large geospatial model is tied to metric space, ensuring accurate estimates in metric scale units », Adds Niantic.

Niantic explains that geospatial models are built from large amounts of raw data, specifically billions of images of the world, all anchored to specific locations. Please note that the American company obtains this information thanks to you. Pokémon GO players train this geospatial artificial intelligence constantly.

The sharing of specific in-game data to participate in this program has been activated in Pokémon GO since July, as specified by 404 Media. It is entirely possible not to contribute by accessing the settings. Niantic says it collects a million new scans every week and has data on 10 million sites scanned around the world using its applications.

It is impossible to know when the LGM will be fully functional for use by players in different industries. They will be able to thank Pokémon GO players once the generative artificial intelligence is ready for use.
