Small revolution to come: Airpods will integrate cameras

Apple is set to completely redesign its AirPods by integrating infrared cameras.

It’s a small revolution and certainly unprecedented in the sector. The IT giant Apple is expected to introduce Airpods equipped with infrared cameras as early as 2026. These would not be used to “capture photos” but as complements to the numerous sensors of the Vision Pro helmet. In other words, Apple would completely transform this accessory to make it an essential object in its vision of the computing of the future.

The rumor started last February, when the very serious Bloomberg mentioned internal discussions at Apple concerning the integration of infrared cameras in the next generation Airpods. Today, it is the internationally renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who is back: the next Airpods will indeed be equipped with infrared cameras. And this, as early as 2026.

The onboard camera(s) would be similar to the FaceID camera on the iPhone. They would be used to improve the experience with the Vision Pro. Concretely, these Airpods would be able to locate themselves in space and adapt the sound according to the movements of the user’s head, so as to adapt the source of a noise to improve the user experience with a Vision Pro headset on the head.

Apple has already placed an order with Foxconn, which would be able to produce up to 10 million units per year.
