Qualcomm takes inspiration from the PC to improve smartphone gaming performance

In its next chip for high-end smartphones, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, Qualcomm is said to have integrated image generation technology to visually improve gaming performance.

Qualcomm should announce its next chip for high-end smartphones in the fall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The SoC has already been the subject of several leaks in recent months, such as the confirmation of the presence of new generation Oryon cores for a consumption announced as much higher.

And according to a recent leak, its graphics should also benefit from serious improvements, including one straight out of the game on PC and portable PC consoles.

Image generation in the next Snapdragon

According to the leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, usually reliable on all topics related to Qualcomm and Snapdragon, the next GPU of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the Adreno 830, could include a frame generation technology. Well known to PC gamers, frame generation is an image interpolation technique that consists of integrating an additional image between two frames rendered by the GPU. At Nvidia, it is possible to activate it in certain games with DLSS 3 on an RTX 40, at AMD, the solution is universal and works with any graphics card.

This wouldn’t be a first on a smartphone: OnePlus has developed its own chip, the Trinity Engine, to significantly boost the performance of mobile games through upscaling and image generation. The leaker hopes that the technology will make it possible to run Genshin Impact in 1080p and 120 FPS on smartphones that can reach such a refresh rate. Other games like Call of Duty : Mobile could also benefit from it, supporting up to 120 frames per second.

Not just for 8 Gen 4?

According to Digital Chat Stationimage generation could also be invited to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 8s Gen 3 thanks to a firmware update. This would confirm that the firm does not have dedicated hardware computing units, as is the case with OnePlus. Information remains scarce on the subject for the moment, we will know more as the official announcement approaches, which should be made in October according to Qualcomm’s usual schedule.
