3 things to know about the long-awaited expansion

The fifth major expansion for Square Enix’s cult MMORPG is nothing short of a revolution. A new beginning after the main story arc, spanning over a decade, concluded with the end of Endwalker. Available from July 2, Dawntrail represents a major turning point for Final Fantasy XIV and its approximately 30 million players. Here is proof in three.

1 A major graphic overhaul

Before even talking about content, it is important to address the tree that hides the forest: with Dawntrail, Final Fantasy XIV affords itself the luxury of a graphic overhaul that is as anticipated as it is meticulous.

Square Enix’s MMORPG has until now been dragging along a technical legacy dated for more than 10 years – far from today’s standards, and especially in comparison to triple A games like Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

But who says higher level of detail, also says technical configurations revised upwards. The publisher has then made available a benchmark tool allowing to know if its machine is powerful enough to run the game in its best light.

2 Two new playable classes

The launch of Dawntrail is accompanied by the addition of two new classes (or jobs) called Viper Ranger and Pictomancer. The first is a damage class adept at dual blades. Very acrobatic, she plays on stealth and speed to deliver a barrage of blows while relying on her lightness to remain mobile.

The Pictomancer is perhaps the most original of the current panel, opting for a delicious mix between magic and pictorial art. Thanks to magic brushes, the latter can summon creatures or objects to help him in combat. This class offers some of the most creative gameplay and a breath of fresh air for veteran players and newcomers alike.

3 A new narrative arc

Finally, and perhaps most importantly for lore enthusiasts, Dawntrail marks the beginning of a brand new story arc — the first in over 10 years. Players will search for El Dorado in the remote land of Tural, west of Eorzea. A new continent inspired by South American and Mesoamerican cultures, which will serve as breeding ground for a new intrigue concerning the future sovereign of these lands.

In addition to these major additions, there are also countless gameplay and comfort improvements. New dungeons, raids and a new game mode focused on crafting and harvesting are also on the program.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail will be officially released on July 2 on PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, at a price of €34.99. People who have pre-ordered the expansion have been able to play it since June 28.
