Sony announces its first constant F2 aperture zoom: the full-frame 28-70mm F2 G Master

SAN DIEGO, November 19, 2024 – Sony Electronics Inc. introduces the 28-70mm F2 G Master, the first Sony constant F2 aperture zoom and the 77th lens in Sony’s E-Mount line. This full-frame lens offers a versatile focal range of 28mm to 70mm while delivering class-leading bokeh2 thanks to its constant F2 aperture. Despite its large aperture and zoom range, the 28-70mm F2 G Master remains compact, lightweight and well balanced, making it ideal for photography and video. The combination of zoom range, large aperture and compact design makes it an innovative and versatile lens for portrait, sports, wedding, event and video professionals.

“Our goal with the 28-70mm F2 G Master was to create a high-performance zoom that could be an alternative to multiple prime lenses,” said Yang Cheng, vice president of imaging solutions at Sony Electronics Inc. “We have prioritized lightweight during the engineering process because we knew it was an essential factor for practical real-life use. And as only Sony can do, we managed to deliver one. small standard F2 zoom lens that doesn’t sacrifice image quality We are proud to add it to our G Master series and believe it is one of the most innovative lenses ever offered to professionals.

Sharp images and beautiful bokeh

The 28-70mm F2 G Master produces razor-sharp images from corner to corner throughout the zoom range, even when shooting wide aperture at F2. The high resolution is made possible by the three XA (extreme aspherical) elements and the three aspherical elements integrated into the lens which minimize aberrations. The lens also features a floating focus system which helps maintain internal stability. This focusing mechanism achieves an impressive minimum focusing distance of 0.38m across the entire zoom range.

True to the G Master lens lineage, opening the lens up to F2 produces extraordinary bokeh, ideal for creating images with a shallow depth of field. The 28-70mm F2 amplifies G Master’s bokeh standards with a new 11-blade circular aperture unit. Chromatic aberrations, which cause color fringing in photos, are effectively minimized with three Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and one in-lens ED element. Additionally, Sony’s Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and internal reflections, ensuring clear images even when there are intense light sources in the frame.

Compact, lightweight design without compromising on quality

The 28-70mm F2 G Master is one of the most advanced mirrorless camera lenses, with a total of 20 different lens elements divided into 14 internal groups. Despite its advanced optical design, the lens remains compact (92.9 x 139.8 mm) and lightweight (918 g). The combination of imaging performance and a compact format offers an innovative solution that meets the demands of industry professionals.

Precise autofocus tracking with instant response

Reliable and responsive autofocus is provided by the lens’ four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, powered by advanced control algorithms. This smooth-performing system provides accurate and fast focus tracking, often essential in many professional use cases such as weddings and sports. This lens is fully compatible with the high-speed continuous shooting capabilities of the Sony Alpha 9 III, up to 120 frames per second3 with AF/AE (autofocus/autoexposure) tracking, even when zoomed.

Designed for high-performance video shooting

With its F2 aperture, the 28-70mm G Master’s zoom range offers a versatile video option that can cover standard field-of-view shots and tighter compositions up to 70mm. This lens minimizes focus breathing due to its construction and compatibility with the focus breathing compensation feature on various Alpha4 bodies. Its high autofocus performance ensures reliable focus, even when recording at high frame rates, up to 4K 120p / FHD 240p5. Additionally, the XD linear motors and new aperture unit operate silently, preventing any lens noise during filming.

The lens is ideal for gimbal use with a minimum zoom extension of approximately 0.68 inches. The compact form factor and short external zoom keep the gimbal balanced, even at varying focal lengths.

Functionality and reliability for versatile control

Key control features include MF Linear Response for intuitive manual focusing, adjustable zoom ring torque, and an aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch. The lens also has two customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch, and an AF/MF switch. The 28-70mm F2 G Master has a filter diameter of 86mm and a practical window on the lens hood for variable filter adjustment.

To ensure the device’s durability, all buttons and switches are sealed with silicone gaskets, and critical areas are designed to resist dust and moisture6. This ensures the reliability of the device, even when used in harsh outdoor environments. Additionally, a fluorine coating on the front element repels contaminants for easier cleaning.

Price and availability

The 28-70mm F2 G Master will be available in December 2024 at an approximate price of 2,899.99 USD and 3,999.99 CAD. It will be sold through various authorized Sony resellers in North America.
