The summer will be busy in the smartphone world with important announcements from two major players: Samsung and Google. The first has just confirmed the organization of a Galaxy Unpacked on July 10 in Paris to discuss its new folding models. It will be quickly followed by Google, which will meet on August 13, 2024. An unusual date for the American giant which used to organize its “Made by Google” conferences much later in the year. The Pixel range, including the Pixel 8, was generally unveiled in October.
The invitation cards indicate that the event will begin on August 13, at 7 p.m. in France. For the Californian group, an announcement in August also reduces the risk of leaks. For years, Google has struggled to maintain suspense around its event dedicated to its devices.
AI disrupts Google’s plans
Like its rival Apple, artificial intelligence seems to dictate the tempo in the Mountain View premises. Google is also presenting its future event under the name « AI… meet IX at Made by Google ». The short video that accompanies the announcement shows what looks like a Pixel 9, without revealing which model it is. The title leaves little room for doubt and confirms that Google will still talk about artificial intelligence.
After Google I/O 2024, the time will be for integration into the brand’s products such as the Pixel 9. The various leaks indicate that Google will no longer present two models, but three smartphones: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The manufacturer should discuss at length the new Tensor chip, necessarily geared towards AI functions. In addition to artificial intelligence with Gemini, the Pixel 9 family will usher in a new design.

The presence of three models in the range recalls Apple’s strategy. It allows the manufacturer to offer several formats around the same experience. The Mountain View firm would go even further by positioning itself again on the folding segment. Indeed, we must not forget the second generation Pixel Fold.
Google’s folding smartphone could also join the main series by opting for the name Pixel 9 Fold or Pixel 9 Pro Fold. These devices will be the ambassadors of Android 15, a new version which could arrive a little sooner than expected. Finally, Google will also integrate AI into its Pixel Watch 3 connected watch.
