Google: the end of a major experiment for the search engine

Google regularly makes important decisions for its products, including its search engine, used daily by millions of people. Unsurprisingly, most of the time, success and cheers are not there. Sometimes, these failures encourage third parties to create extensions to regain the original functioning of a tool. Sometimes it’s Google itself that backtracks. This is today the case with a central element of its search engine. Google has decided to return to displaying search results on several pages, instead of an infinite display.

This infinite display, or continuous scrolling, was introduced on mobile in October 2021 and on desktop in December 2022. A year and a half after this arrival on desktop, Google will therefore return to the traditional display on several pages, accessible with the Next or the different “o”s in the pagination bar Gooooooogle. It will therefore soon no longer be necessary to go down again and again in search of a result, since you will have to manually move to another result page.

The media Search Engine Land, which relays the information citing Google, indicates that this change was deployed on Tuesday June 25 on desktop. For mobiles, you will have to wait “the next months“.

A change with serious consequences

To justify this step back, Google states that the objective is to be able to display the results of a search more quickly, since fewer results will be displayed at once, while putting aside those deemed less relevant. Additionally, according to the firm, automatically loading more results did not lead to significantly higher satisfaction with its search engine.

With this step backwards, users and professionals alike risk being impacted. While Google now displays many more suggestions that are not always necessary at the top of the results in the form of cards (questions asked by other Internet users, AI suggestions, etc.) during a search, you will probably have to click more on the following pages to find a solution to his problem. A real headache for websites looking for SEO and visits, since it is very penalizing to find yourself relegated outside the first page in the absence of continuous scrolling. You will therefore have to work extra hard to be seen.
