But who buys 50 euro games on iPhone? Answer: almost no one

Being able to play Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Death Stranding, Resident Evil 4 Remake or Resident Evil Village on iPhone, in their pure version as on console, it is the promise ofApple since the launch of theiPhone 15 Pro last year. It was about demonstrating the power ofA17 Pro and its graphics skills – just think, we can even activate ray tracing, even if the question of interest arises on a smartphone screen.

Without Apple really intending it, the iPhone has become one of the biggest platforms for gamers. But ultimately there is very little difference between an iOS game and its Android equivalent, whether in terms of features or price (generally, it’s free with ads or micro-transactions). By highlighting the possibility of playing AAA games on iPhone, the Apple firm is seeking to widen the gap with its great rival and in fact, games from Ubisoft and Capcom have not been ported to Android .

3,000 players reportedly paid for Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Unfortunately for Apple, the sauce doesn’t seem to have set. According to data from Appfigures and Appmagic, two companies specializing in app store analytics, the games in question were a resounding flop. Assassin’s Creed Mirage would have brought in $138,000, with 123,000 downloads. The game can be downloaded for free, to unlock the whole thing you have to pay €49.99: only 3,000 players would have checked out, according to the calculation of MobileGamer.biz based on figures from Appfigures.

Appmagic gives slightly better results for the Ubisoft game: $221,000 in revenue for 279,000 downloads. In both cases, however, there is no reason to pop the champagne cork. There was reason to hope for millions of downloads given the pedigree of the franchise and its favorable reception when it was launched on PC and consoles last year.

It is hardly more glorious for Resident Evil 4 with estimated sales of $208,000 (7,000 people would have paid the €29.99 requested). It’s even worse on the side of Resident Evil Villagewith $92,000 in gross revenue, or 5,750 players having purchased the game (€15.99). Finally, Death Strandingsold for €22.99 would settle for revenue of $212,000 (it doesn’t even show up in Appfigures download data).

Appmagic’s figures are a little more favorable each time, but they are not really spectacular for games that regularly appear in Apple’s communications. “ These figures are far from a success ”, understatement Andrei Zubov, content manager at Appmagic, “ especially compared to the sales achieved by AAA games on their main platforms ».

iPhone users clearly prefer to play mobile games that are better suited to their devices (a controller is often required to enjoy AAA games) and that are designed around short sessions. Above all, they are most of the time free or sold much cheaper: a “premium” mobile game is often offered for around €5, more rarely €10.

Another problem: players who have treated themselves to an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max generally have the means to buy devices dedicated to video games such as a console or a PC, which will be better equipped (large screen, more power) to do so. run this kind of demanding games. “ I fear that even if consumers realize they can play Assassin’s Creed Mirage on their phones and tablets [les jeux sont aussi compatibles avec les iPad M1 et suivants, ndr]unlocking the game for €50 as an in-app purchase will end the decision process immediately », Explains Randy Nelson of Appfigures.

However, Apple’s partner publishers (who must surely be digging into their pockets to ensure quality ports) are not done with this experiment. Ubisoft will thus release Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Mac and iPad at the same time as other platforms, in November. Other episodes of Resident Evil are also on the Capcom program.
