(ETX Daily Up) – Google is preparing to delete your location history, switching its backup service from the cloud to Maps users’ mobile devices. No stress: it’s very easy to download this data to keep track of it.

From December 2024, Google will gradually change the management of Maps users’ location data. Location history, if enabled, will no longer be stored primarily in the cloud. Now, this data will be stored locally, directly on user devices, but with enhanced encryption options to ensure its security. Unfortunately, this development is also accompanied by an automatic deletion of data older than three months. These changes will be rolled out gradually, both on Android and iOS, but you should take the lead if you don’t want your location history to disappear permanently. Obviously, for those who had disabled position saving, this changes nothing.

To avoid losing your data, you must therefore go to Takeout, the tool which allows you to export your Google data to make a backup. Users wishing to keep track of their various journeys must then uncheck all the boxes, with the exception of the one dedicated to “Location history (Your journeys)”, select “Next step”, manage the destination of this data then select ” Create an export”. That’s it, they will then receive a copy of their location history on Maps.

Location information is personal and Google has always been committed to keeping it confidential and not reselling it. By keeping them directly on their terminal, users can keep control over them.
