Gemini AI wouldn’t come to iPhone until next year

Rumors of a possible collaboration between Apple and other tech firms, such as Google and Anthropic, continue. Indeed, Apple would stop at nothing to enrich the features of the iPhone.

Little reminder

At WWDC 2024, Craig Federighi presented Artificial Intelligence projects on the iPhone and iOS 18 : on the one hand, the arrival of Apple Intelligence (the firm’s in-house AI) and on the other, the ChatGPT integration. Indeed, if the user is not satisfied with Apple Intelligence services, they can always ask Siri to use ChatGPT!

The partnership with OpenAI has therefore been formalized – although the conditions are not known. The conversational bot will also be based on GPT-4o (in its free version, but there may be some limitations). Siri will ask for permission to share your photos, PDFs, emails, notes with ChatGPT.

Users who opt for the free version of ChatGPT will be able to do so without privacy concerns. Requests are not logged and user data is not saved. Finally at the end, Hair Force One also hinted that other models might be available at a later date, such as Google Gemini.

Third-party AI on the iPhone

Apple integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into the iOS 18.2 betaavailable in December. This marks a major first step toward the adoption of conversational bots in the Apple ecosystem. According to Mark Gurman, the Californian firm would also offer OpenAI a period of exclusivity as part of their mystery partnership.

But Google Gemini could well arrive next year. However, we would have to wait for iOS 19! While awaiting this integration, Google has launched a Gemini app on the iPhone, giving iOS users direct access to Google’s AI right now.

iOS 18.2

Other future enhancements include integration with Google Gemini. But Apple will likely give OpenAI a nice window of exclusivity, especially since it’s not exactly paying for the technology. So I wouldn’t expect the Gemini chatbot to come to iOS until next year.

In any case, Apple seems to be moving cautiously. It would perhaps test the reception of ChatGPT among its users before opening its ecosystem to other players. This delay would also allow it to refine the integration of its own generative AI, guaranteeing its policy on confidentiality and software optimization.
