RCS support in the Messages app is slowly ramping up

Apple has barely elaborated on the subject, but one of the most interesting new features of iOS 18 is the support for RCS in the Messages app which will facilitate exchanges between owners of iPhones and Android smartphones. However, you will have to be patient before taking advantage of it.

Beta 2 ofiOS 18 distributed Monday evening had the effect of displaying in the app settings Messagesa new “RCS Messaging” option for several users… but not for all, at least not yet. Apple is in fact preparing the support for Rich Communication Services, which are intended to replace traditional SMS/MMS.

Better communication between iPhone and Android

Apple’s announcement of RCS support last November surprised everyone, the company having in the past said on several occasions to what extent it did not care (sometimes with a certain haughtiness) about this standard pushed by Google and a much of the industry. China would have played a big role in this spectacular turnaround.

But regardless of Apple’s moods: the arrival of RCS will benefit all users, whether they have an iPhone or Android. If the former will keep their blue bubble (the iMessage symbol) and the latter a green bubble, communications will improve: photos and videos will be displayed in high definition, group conversations will be more fluid, there will be a will also have acknowledgments of receipt of reading and entry,

However, it is not enough to install the iOS 18 betas to automatically benefit from RCS. As explained 9to5Mac who dug into the code of beta 2, the operators also have their part to play. The operator settings must indeed be updated and for the moment, very few have done so: in the United States, AT&T and T-Mobile are already there.

However, operators still have a little time ahead of them. The final version of iOS 18 will ship this fall, probably in September.
