ChatGPT goes beyond its usual framework to work directly with third-party software on Mac. The OpenAI bot is now able to automatically read code from Xcode and other app design tools, saving developers valuable time. And that’s just the first step.
“AI agents” are the next wave of the generative artificial intelligence tsunami: they give bots the ability to interact with other applications. And therefore to take on tedious or repetitive tasks. Claude AI, the Anthropic bot, and the future Jarvis from Google are in the starting blocks. No question for OpenAI to get left behind!

On Mac, ChatGPT is now able to read computer code without having to copy/paste it into the bot’s request window. Several applications are compatible: Xcode, Terminal, TextEdit, iTerm2 and VS Code. This “Work with Apps” feature saves developers time as the bot automatically receives the current section of code, providing context to which the developer’s text query is added.
Unlike other tools like Cursor or GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT cannot write code directly to these apps. But it is a step, certainly limited but important, towards an intelligent agent. Paid ChatGPT users (Plus and Team) can now use this new feature available in the ChatGPT macOS app.
Work with Apps leverages the macOS Accessibility API to “read” content from other software. This is an option that is usually used in VoiceOver, Apple’s screen reader for visually impaired people. Very useful, the function sometimes lacks precision, which explains why you need to install an extension for VS Code.
OpenAI started with code apps because ChatGPT is particularly popular among developers. Eventually, the bot will be able to converse with other apps, especially text-based ones. At the moment, it is still unknown if and when this function will be offered on Windows.
