If the Suunto Vertical sports watch is an ideal model for outdoor activities, it is above all thanks to its very good mapping, its excellent autonomy and its precise sensors. A reference that we really appreciated and that we currently find at 499 euros instead of 599 euros at Decathlon, Darty or even at Fnac.

In May 2023, the Finnish brand Suunto launched its new high-end sports watch, designed for outdoor activities: the Suunto Vertical. And while the Suunto 9 Peak Pro, which preceded it, did not include mapping, which is essential for outdoor sports excursions, Suunto has fortunately corrected this error. The mapping offered by the Suunto Vertical also has the advantage of being detailed and very responsive, which we really liked during our test. In short, we have a very effective watch here, and the good news is that we can find it on sale right now.

The strong points of the Suunto Vertical

  • Elegant design
  • A detailed map
  • A very precise altimeter and GNSS
  • Simply excellent autonomy

Initially priced at 599 euros, the Suunto Vertical is now offered at 499 euros at Decathlon, Darty and Fnac.

Suunto Vertical at the best price?

A massive, but elegant watch… And durable

Watches designed for sports are often thicker than other connected watches. The Suunto Vertical does not escape this cliché with its 49 mm case and its weight of 86 g; In short, it clearly does not go unnoticed. However, Suunto being a brand attached to minimalist aesthetics, the Suunto Vertical is certainly massive, but its flat dial is rather sober, at least without embellishment, despite its three clearly visible buttons. Otherwise, as a sports watch, the Finnish manufacturer ensured that it could withstand a depth of 100 meters and even tested its watch according to military standards. Suffice to say that small shocks will not scare him.

Concerning its screen, the Suunto Vertical integrates a 1.4-inch panel offering transflective MIP screen technology, which works a bit like the e-ink display of an e-reader. This MIP screen is especially readable under the sun, and in dark environments, a backlight can take over. This technology also allows you to benefit from better autonomy. And speaking of autonomy, know that that of the Suunto Vertical is quite simply impressive: nine days of daily use including more than 30 hours of activity will have exhausted the watch during our test. Who says better ?

Cartography, finally!

The Suunto Vertical comes with an application, simply called Suunto, and very pleasant to use. On it, we can notably find a host of graphics on our training, the creation of very quick routes or even a menu dedicated to cartography. Yes, the Suunto Vertical allows, unlike its predecessor, to follow a route directly from the watch during trail outings. And it’s a real success: the display is very responsive, the details numerous, zooming in and out possible and very practical. Note that the map is not only accessible during an activity, it is also available from one of the watch menus. During our test, we nevertheless noted a few areas for improvement: for example, we would have liked the names of streets and paths to be displayed, that the maximum zoom out was greater than 500 meters or that it was possible to create a trace from the watch.

The Suunto Vertical also has an L1+L5 dual-frequency multi-GNSS chip, which can communicate with traditional GNSS: GPS, Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and Beidou. The lines are very precise. The watch is also equipped with several sensors: LifeQ heart rate monitor, pulse oximeter, depth meter, accelerometer, gyroscope… Special mention for the very effective altimeter. On the other hand, when it comes to sleep tracking, it’s quite disappointing. The lack of connectivity is also frustrating: the watch cannot store music, display a calendar or even allow us to pay contactless.
