Pixel Feature Drop: the June 2004 update is full of new features!

Announcement

► In brief

  • Google rolls out the June Feature Drop
  • An update incorporating many features
  • However, it is only intended for part of the Pixel range

As we know, the Android OS is actually separated into two: on the one hand, AOSP (Android Open Source Project), serving as the basis for manufacturers’ operating systems, and the proprietary overlay, developed by a manufacturer for its own models. As for the Pixel range, developed by Google, we find Pixel UI, a suite which aims to be closest to the original Android experience.

And, to pamper its users, Google regularly releases updates intended only for owners of devices from the Pixel range: Feature Drops. Thus, the company regularly deploys new features, specifically designed for its smartphones and tablets. And, as summer approaches, Mountain View is spoiling its community with a lot of rather interesting new features!

Features available depending on the model

These are 6 major features which are added to the already very wide range of possibilities offered by the devices in the Pixel range. First of all, let’s clarify that these additions are only intended for Pixel 6 and above; some, moreover, are only available on the most recent models in the range. The reason is simple: from now on, Google only relies on its Tensor chipeffectively excluding devices not equipped with it.

In fact, what are these 5 new features deployed with the June Feature Drop update? We find, in bulk, AI, photography, but also new options intended to facilitate the user experience. In detail, here is what is integrated into the Pixel ecosystem:

  • Cast USB : the user can now broadcast the content of their screen to a television or other terminal via a simple USB connection.
  • Improved localization : it is now possible to geolocate your device even if it is turned off and/or with a discharged battery. This is possible for a minimum of 23 hours, according to Google.
  • HDR+ enhanced : the Pixel Camera application can now identify the best time to capture a shot in HDR+.
  • Improved transcription : record a conversation between several people and ask the AI to transcribe it into writing.
  • Gemini Nano : it’s official, Google’s AI model is now integrated into the Pixel range, only for the latest models however.
  • Reverse search : the user can now search in reverse for calls from unknown numbers.
  • Lens selection : it is now possible to manually select the photo lens used when capturing an image.

Features, model by modelFeatures, model by model

While these features are at the heart of the June Feature Drop, other secondary additions are also part of the journey. Thus, Google indicates the expansion of its Wallet to India, as well as certain new features specific to Pixel Watches. While all of this is very interesting, let’s note the gradual slowdown in updates on Pixel 6. While its predecessor, the Pixel 5, is officially shelved, the very first smartphone equipped with the Google Tensor chip could soon also , see his turn arrive.
