He arrives at our meeting with his blue and orange jersey. Its association, Crazy Esport, is highlighted on the outfit, as is the logo of the Brittany region, one of the team’s sponsors. His player name, Hexmark, is printed on the back.

In the city, Jean Burlot, a professional in the hotel industry in Brest where he comes from, has everything of a calm guy. Calm and thoughtful. In the world of eSports, it is better not to face him on Tekkena 3D fighting video game.

The 28-year-old young man now has no problem getting to the biggest French tournaments. His transport tickets and accommodation on site are paid for by the team he joined in February 2022.

Financially supported by the community

When he was still a student, he couldn’t afford to pay to travel to eSports fairs to compete against different gamers in an arena, in front of an audience. He was playing at home, like the vast majority of players.

I sometimes played local tournaments with the Brest association Guard Impact. Otherwise, I streamed my gameplay for my friends on Twitch. I got noticed by high level players, they encouraged me to take part in tournaments. I didn’t have the money, so the community chipped in so that I could play in a tournament in the Paris region, in December 2021. I finished 3rd. I made a name for myself.

Jean Burlot, aka Hexmark

Especially since shortly after, he finished again on 3e steps on the podium during a major tournament in Lyon. Once again, the community helped him financially.

This is how the Breton association Crazy Esport approached him to join the team as a player specializing in the game Tekken. And why not Street Fighter or Smash Bros, other fighting games? “I started Tekken when I was 5 years old. I like this game, I played all the episodes. »

Miguel, his “a little crazy” character

One of the characters particularly appealed to him, Miguel Caballero Rojo. “They all have their own fighting style, their qualities. I’m offensive, he’s a street fighter. And he’s a little crazy. »

Jeans had to learn to understand his character, its specificities. To get the most out of it and beat your opponents with it. Problem, version 8 of the game was released at the beginning of the year. Without Miguel. For the moment. The Brestois has taken over from Paul Phoenix.

Over time, Jean Burlot became a reference for other players. A source of inspiration, of which he is proud. “I try to be a bridge between the amateur and professional world. I give advice to others. But there is no secret, you have to work. »

Healthy lifestyle, one of the keys to success

When he was a student, Jean could play up to ten hours a day. He trains less today. He improved his lifestyle to perform during tournaments. “The brain tires, concentrating consumes energy. I eat healthily, I pay attention to my sleep. » In order to aim for the summits? “I have tournaments planned in Lyon and Paris this summer, I am focusing on France, we will see Europe afterwards. Learning is acquired through experience, I see this game as a marathon. I have a job, I have no ambition to make a living from eSports. »
