In total, it took almost 11 years before CD Projekt released the final version of its Cyberpunk 2077. With its update 2.0 and its Phantom Liberty DLC, CD Projekt has indeed managed to turn around the general opinion on its game at the tumultuous exit. In this JV Legends, we return to the incredible story of one of the most remarkable redemptions in video game history.
Wake up Samurai, we have a game to burn
In 2012, CD Projekt Red unveiled an intriguing “reveal teaser” in which an android was apprehended by local police after committing a mass murder. This first teaser of Cyberpunk 2077 created excitement among many players, convinced that CD Projekt, of which we were still waiting for the third The Witcherwas ready to release a major new RPG. In the eight years that separate this teaser from the game's release, the Polish studio will then carefully reveal its work and unfold its promises.
Unfortunately, the patience of the players will fade over the years and successive postponements of Cyberpunk 2077. When it was released in December 2020, the public will quickly rebel against a buggy game, almost unplayable on PS4 and Xbox One and with many cut gameplay mechanics. After this disastrous launch, what was then a highly anticipated blockbuster could well have gone down in history as one of the most failed launches in recent video game history, but that was without counting on the determination of CD Projekt Red.
Post-mortem operation
Indeed upon its release, Cyberpunk 2077 is stoned by the public and the press alike, both criticizing an incomplete game, with partly unfulfilled promises and obvious technical problems. Proof of the unprecedented nature of the situation, many merchants, including Sony via its PlayStation Store, have decided to reimburse players who have purchased the game and who are disappointed with their purchase, a decision which will go as far as the complete withdrawal of the game from marketplace virtual from the Japanese firm.
A situation nothing short of catastrophic for the studio following which Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of the studio, will find himself apologizing for this release and affirming CD Projekt's commitment to providing solutions to the problems of Cyberpunk 2077. To do this, the developers will spend almost 3 years reworking the game, releasing numerous patches and updates of varying sizefixing many of the bugs while adding some of the previously missing mechanics. In the JV Legends, at the top of the article, we look back on this incredible story as well as the future of a game now widely appreciated by players.
