When you think of building games, Minecraft immediately comes to mind. However, he is not the only one on the market. A few years ago, an iconic license also tried it, with excellent results. Even today, its community is doing great things in the game.

When Dragon Quest played Minecraft
If you like construction and you are not afraid of evolving in a world made entirely of cubes in pixels, you have most certainly already played Minecraft. It must be said that Mojang's video game is literally the best-selling video game of all time with more than 300 million sales according to 2023 figures, ahead of Grand Theft Auto V which peaks at 200 million. But despite its status as a true juggernaut of the genre, other video games have still tried to compete with it… and sometimes brilliantly.
In 2016, Square Enix surprised everyone by releasing Dragon Quest Builders on PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. In the latter, we found all the elements that made Dragon Quest an authentic JRPG extremely popular in Japan and the rest of the world, all mixed with everything that had made Minecraft a real phenomenon. A daring but successful mixture which earned it the excellent rating of 17/20 in our columns and above all the right to have a sequel. In 2019, Square Enix indeed reiterated with Dragon Quest Builders 2which used the same formula while improving it even further. This time, we gave it an 18/20.
The Dragon Quest Builders 2 Community Is Doing Awesome Things
Unfortunately, despite all the undeniable qualities of Dragon Quest Builders 2it must be admitted that it did not have the same cultural impact as its Minecraft inspiration. Worse still, 5 years after its release, the game seems to have been forgotten by some players. However, it still offers a very beautiful, modular universe in the same way as Minecraft, and those who still play it continue to create very beautiful things.
As you can see in the Tweet above, Dragon Quest Builders 2 players manage to make constructions at least as impressive as those of Minecraft. Whether by reproducing characters whose height has been magnified a hundred times, by terraforming the surroundings to create a beautiful environment or by “drawing” real-life animals, Dragon Quest Builders 2 players prove that the game is clearly very permissive as long as you give it time. And the best part of all this is that unlike Minecraft, Square Enix's game offers to mix this aspect with a story and combat worthy of the rest of the franchise. If you haven't tried Dragon Quest Builders 2 yet, it might be time to add it to your gaming to-do list.
