We built the little McLaren P1 out of Lego… while the big one drove on the track

With its Technic model of the McLaren P1, Lego allows construction enthusiasts to recreate a supercar in their living room. But while some are assembling this miniature version, a life-size Lego replica of the P1 has already taken to the track at Silverstone, proving that bricks can take on big challenges.

Lego Technic bricks allow you to reconstruct sometimes impressive pieces; and this year, the brand has launched a double challenge around the McLaren P1. For the general public, a miniature set of almost 4000 parts are available, with an intricate assembly of dummy engines, suspensions and mechanical details of the supercar. Enough to have fun for several hours (count a good ten), even for experienced amateurs:

But this 1:8 model, whose price is still around 400€is not the only Lego McLaren P1 to attract attention: a full-size version, built with… 342,817 brickstook to the Silverstone track under the gaze of the driver Lando Norris.

Two rooms, two atmospheres

For those who will be satisfied with the reduced version, the experience remains intense. The miniature Technic model reproduces surprising technical details, from the gearbox to the dihedral doors, giving fans of supercars and construction a challenge that meets their expectations. Nothing very complicated, but you shouldn’t make a mistake, because disassembly can then turn out to be very, very frustrating. “This set targets fans of mechanics and precision, with components that imitate the movements of the real P1“, underlines Lukáš Horák, project manager at Lego. The elements are functional and require patience that collectors will undoubtedly appreciate.

On the Silverstone side, the life-size project of the McLaren P1 in Lego has left its mark on other minds… “Having worked on the original P1 program at McLaren, it’s great to see so many elements of the original McLaren P1 brought to life on the full-scale model made by the Lego Technic team. This car was an icon at the time”explained for his part Ben Gulliver, director of testing and development, McLaren Automobile.
